Are you having Over Bite Issues in Palm Desert?

Overbite
If you are experiencing bite problems that include over biting, under bites or cross bites, you many be experiencing a symptom called Malocclusions.  A disorder that involves the alignment of the Jaw.  It can restrict talking, restrict proper chewing and swallowing. The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry can help patients with bite problems.  It is common that patients with Malocclusion are at a greater risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease because bite misalignment often makes it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene.

A malocclusion is a misalignment of teeth and/or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches. The term was coined by Edward Angle, the “father of modern orthodontics,” as a derivative of occlusion, which refers to the manner in which opposing teeth meet.  Over biting or under bites or jaws that are not in alignment can be the cause of headaches and pain in the jaw call Temporomandibular joint disord (TMJ).

Periodontists like Dr. Anne A. Nicholas can help patients deal with this problem. She will exam, diagnose and develop a successful treatment plan that will address the issues of Malocclusion.  She can be reached at 716-340-1030. Her office is located at 73929 Larrea Street, Suite 2 in Palm Desert. You can find more information about Malocclusion at http://www.palmdesertimplantdentist.com.

How can we better Serve You in 2011?

Successful dentists have followed their patients onto the Internet, taking advantage of the medium to expand their offerings and transition from simply providing products or services to offering in-depth content about their services and industry.  The increasing online sophistication of patients in terms of being able to use multiple keywords, searches, specification/precision definitions, and online tools has driven the need for dentists to engage in a more interactive role with them.  In the research aspect of the buy cycle, patients initially need to find basic information on the product and services they are searching for, using online tools such as general search engines, dental websites, network forums and dental-specific search engine directories.

The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic, Sedation and Implant Dentistry has provided a dental-specific website which provides patients with qualified information about our products and services.  We have many videos for your viewing and white-papers patients can down-load to read information about the latest in dental procedures and technology.  It is our goal for 2011 to continue to provide dental information to educate and inform our patients concerning the latest in dentistry.

We would like to hear from you this coming year about how we can provide better service and information to help you.  Please feel free to email us: exquisitedentistry@yahoo.com or by telephone at 760-340-1030.  Feel free to fill out the (Contact Information form) as well.

Are Children at risk of Periodontal Disease?

Bleeding

If someone asked you if children are at risk for periodontal disease, what would your answer be? Most of us think periodontal disease is and adult problem and children are not at risk. But studies indicate children and adolescents have gingivitis which is a symptom of early stage periodontal disease.

The American Academy Of Periodontology discusses the types of periodontal diseases in children. We suggest that parents study this topic to determine if their children are at risk of getting more serious forms of periodontal disease. By clicking the link above, it will take you to perio.org where you will find additional information on this topic.

You will also note on this site information about, “Periodontal Disease Runs in the Family” and additional facts that mention bacteria which causes periodontal disease may be passed from one person to another though saliva. Children and young adolescents would be served well by informing them of these facts. As always, if you have concerns or questions about Periodontal Disease, you can contact The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry for more information; Dr. Anne A. Nicholas is there to answer your question and treat Periodontal Disease.

Are You Concerned About These Symptoms?

Caring for your oral health includes regular teeth and gum care. Neglecting your gums can eventually lead to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, which is a culprit for the deterioration of your overall oral health. Periodontal disease affects 75 percent of adults over 35 years of age and is responsible for approximately 70 percent of all adult tooth loss. Since symptoms of periodontal disease are mild, some people never realize their mouth is under bacterial attack.

Highly recognized as a greatly progressive disorder, periodontal disease is triggered by preventable factors, like plaque buildup, tobacco use, certain medications, and stress, as well as unpreventable causes, like systematic disease and fluctuating hormone levels during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Research proves up to 30 percent of the population may be genetically susceptible to gum disease.

Periodontal disease begins when the bacteria in the sticky film which forms on the tooth surface, what we call plaque, causes gum inflammation. If the irritation is ignored, plaque will release toxins to break down the natural fibers that hold your gums to your teeth, permitting even more bacteria and toxins to invade. Plaque deposits quickly harden into calculus or tartar, which is a rough, porous substance that cannot be removed by brushing. Over time, this progression can lead to severe inflammation, bone loss, gum recession, and tooth loss.periotooth

Symptoms and signs include:

•    Red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums
•    Gum recession, or gums pulling away from teeth
•    Loose or separating teeth
•    Pus between the gum and tooth
•    Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
•    Bite changes
•    Change in the fit of partial dentures

If you have noticed any of the above signs or symptoms, please call The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry immediately to schedule a consultation and assessment with Dr. Anne A. Nicholas.  Together, we can win the battle against periodontal disease and maintain your fresh and healthy smile.

Laser Technology for the Treatment of Gum Disease in Palm Desert

lazerteethThe diode laser has become an important tool in the dental armamentarium due to its exceptional ease of use and affordability. It also has key advantages with regard to periodontal treatment. The diode laser is well absorbed by melanin, haemoglobin and other chromophores that are present in periodontal disease.

Thus, the diode specifically targets unhealthy gingival tissues. The laser energy is transmitted through a thin fiber that can easily penetrate into deep periodontal pockets to deliver its therapeutic effects.  A diode laser leads to complete epithelial removal while instrumentation with conventional curettes leaves significant epithelial remnants.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by a bacterial infection. Hence, the bactericidal and detoxifying effect of laser treatment is advantageous in periodontal therapy. Significant improvement in decontamination and effective treatment of peri-implantitis also occurs with the addition of diode laser therapy.

Patients need treatment. Laser-assisted periodontal therapy is non-invasive. With the diode laser there is a reduced need for systemic or locally applied antimicrobials. This leads to fewer allergic reactions and antibiotic resistance.

The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic, Sedation and Implant Dentistry offers laser technology and Dr. Anne A. Nicholas will apply the treatment when it is in the best interest of her patients. For additional information please contact The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic , Sedation and Implant Dentistry at 73-929 Larrea Street, Suite 2, Palm Desert, CA.  Or,  Contact us by phone: (760-340-1030)

Brushing & Flossing Should be a Daily Habit

Presentation1Many of our patients brush their teeth regularly, but fail to clean between their teeth.  It is important that flossing is done regularly as well.   In our busy lives, we sometime neglect to brush properly as well and put off flossing all together.  This is a big mistake, and here is why!

Periodontal problems start between the teeth where normal brushing cannot get clean, so bacteria builds up which causes redness or soreness and if left untreated can be the beginning of periodontal disease.  It is not uncommon to see gum’s receding and the jaw bone starting to deteriorate which will lead to expensive dentistry to repair.

It is far better to get in the habit of daily, brushing and flossing your teeth.   Take a tooth brush and floss with you to work, and use them after breakfast snacks and lunch.   The combination of daily care and regular professional cleanings provides the best opportunity to prevent sever dental disease.

Studies show that patients who get into good brushing and flossing habits coupled with regular visit with their dentists for cleanings have far less problems with their teeth and gum’s and their overall dental health is significantly better.  Make smart choices when it comes to your health, and protect yourself from disease with good daily habits.

And finally, look for the American Dental Associations’ Seal of Acceptance on brushes, toothpastes, mouth rinses, and other oral care products.  You can be assured that these products meet the ADA guidelines and will provide the safety and effectiveness you are looking for in dental care products.

Call us or stop by for a visit; The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry is located at 73-929 Larrea Street, Suite 2, Palm Desert, CA 92260.  Contact us by phone: (760-340-1030)
