9 Reasons to Consider Dental Implants to Replace Missing Teeth or Strengthen Dentures!

shutterstock_1441984

1.    You will look younger.
Dental implants prevent the bone loss that is common with the loss of teeth. By preventing bone loss, your facial structures remain normal and intact, which reduces wrinkling and the look of old age.

2.    Your quality of life will improve.
Dental implants look, feel, and function more like natural teeth, which allow you to smile, laugh, and eat with confidence.

3.    You will improve your nutrition.
Fresh vegetables, corn, and fruit are back on the menu! Dental implants are stronger than dentures so you can eat the foods you like. And since your chewing will improve, your digestion will improve as well.

4.    You will gain confidence in social situations.
Our patients love their implants because of their improved appearance, function, and comfort. You will never again have to cover your mouth with your hand or delay eating out of fear that your denture will pop out or gag you. The improved appearance of your new smile will have people giving you compliments galore.

5.    You will eliminate denture adhesives FOREVER!
Implant supported teeth are securely attached so there is no need for messy dentures adhesives. You will never again worry about your dentures flying out when you laugh, sneeze, or eat.

6. Your mouth will be restored to its natural state.
By replacing the entire tooth, as well as the tooth root, it is possible to replicate the function of natural teeth, with a strong, stable foundation that allows comfortable biting and chewing.

7. You will enjoy eating again.
Wearing an upper denture can prevent you from really tasting food, because the roof of the mouth is covered. With implant supported teeth, it is not necessary to cover the roof of the mouth, so you can truly enjoy the taste of foods.

8.    You will improve your overall oral health.
Dental implants improve your overall oral health and decrease your risk of oral cancer and heart disease. Plus, because it is easier to care for implants than dentures, they decrease your chance of bacteria build up and gum disease.

9.    Your will protect your other teeth.
Replacing teeth with implant supported crowns and bridges does not involve the adjacent natural teeth, and thus will not damage them. On the other hand, partial dentures clamp onto adjacent teeth, which can loosen them, and bridges require grinding down of the adjacent teeth so that the bridge can be cemented on them. This tooth structure can never be replaced and the long-term health of these teeth is compromised.

Interesting Endorsement from Non-Dental Publication about Implants in the News

ImplantLast year in the New York Times I recall an interesting article talking about the difference between implants and bridges.  This article is a non-dental publication that gives an endorsement for implants as the new standard of care for missing teeth and its benefits for patients considering this option.  Entitled “A Dental Shift: Implants Instead of Bridges,” this author provides some important in-site for patients who are considering the choice between implants or bridges.

In the article it points out; implants won’t decay, are easy to clean and floss between, don’t need to be replaced, or be attached to other teeth.  This author makes the point that over the long run, implants are the best choice and delivers the highest value.

This is Dr. Anne A. Nicholas of “The Palm Desert Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry” and I recommend that all my patients considering the choice between implants or bridges read this article.  Please click the link high lighted above to access this article.

Implantology

What should you consider when selecting an implant dentist and implant solutions?  There are several things to consider.  First, due to present economic times, if you are like most people, you will want to shop around and compare prices.  This is always a recommended practice, and remembers “caveat emptor” buyers beware.  It is going to be tempting to go with the dental practice offering the lowest prices, but in some cases, you might be wiser to choose the higher-end dental specialists because, implantology is a science, and you should do your research on the doctor and their entire staff and facilities to determine available technology and skill level, experience and training.   Presentation1
(Cross-sectional view showing 3mm one-piece Biohorizons implant to replace maxillary lateral incisor.  One-piece 3mm implant allow for placement in minimal buccal/lingual bone.)

You are in fact attaching something to your body; restoring implants to replace missing oral structures.  It is therefore important not to cut corners when it comes to your own body.  Of course you can, it is your decision, but we recommend you give serious thought to this decision.

At Dr. Anne A. Nicholas practices located in Palm Desert, and Palm Springs, her staff is there to provide information and guidance so you can start to understand the process of implant restoration.  A website has been designed and loaded with information to help you as well.  We welcome you to visit www.palmdesertimplantdentist.com where you will find many reports that you can download for free and educate yourself on implantology and the choices that are available.

Second, having gained knowledge and understanding, you are now prepared to ask dental specialists like Dr. Nicholas important questions that will help you understand the options available to you.  You see, there is the actual procedure of preparing your mouth for the implant; for example, you may need bone replacement prior to the actual implant restoration.  Do you know what Osseointegration and its relationship to an artificial implant is?  Plus, there are many different implants available and the placement varies depending on the type selected.  Here too, cost varies, which means quality and performance differences.

Third, you want value for your dollars spent and the best quality and performance of services rendered.  Implantology is a new technology in the cosmetic dentistry area of improving how your teeth and jaw perform their essential functions.  An implant dentist will measure and determine placement of teeth, bone density, periodontal requirements, and sinus lifts to ensure the procedure is perfect.  You are looking for a specialist who love their work, and are committed to a technically flawless procedure, which means for you great results and great value.

Call Dr. Anne A. Nicholas today, 760.340.1030, for and appointment today.  She has offices in Palm Desert and Palm Springs, and services Rancho Mirage and the entire Coachilla Valley.

Information You should know about Implant Restoration

Dental implant restorations replace missing oral structures and are permanent tooth replacements.  Implants hold a crown, bridge or denture in place and allow for natural eating, speaking and cosmetic function.  There are several key components to understand when considering dental implants.

1.    The Dental Prosthetics:
a.    Dental implant which are made from titanium alloys and will be replacing and acting like your original tooth root.  Dentists like Dr. Anne A. Nicholas, Palm Desert, California surgically place implants in the jaw bone, where the implant will integrate with the jaw bone after a certain period of time.
b.   Abutment Preparation
c.   Hybrid Denture with abutments and screws
d.   Types of Implant Restorations placed on top of dental implant for function:

i.     Porcelain to non-precious with metal occlusal
ii.    Porcelain to white high Noble with metal occlusal
iii.   Porcelain to yellow high Noble
iv.   Porcelain to Zirconia

2.    Diagnosis & Treatment Planning:
a.    Medical Contraindications – Dr. Nicholas will consult with you regarding contraindication which is a specific situation in which a drug, procedure or surgery should or should not be used because it may be harmful to you.
b.    Pre-Surgical Planning – Dr. Nicholas and her staff will provide you with pre-surgery instructions that will help you prepare for the implant procedure as well as outpatient procedures to help you return to your home safely.

3.    Surgical:
a.    The actual surgery occurs in several stages and involves several procedures.  Implant surgery varies from patient to patient and depends on the type of implant and condition of your jawbone.
b.    Most adults are candidates for the procedure; dental implant surgery is expensive and often not covered by insurance.  Dr. Anne A. Nicholas of Palm Desert and Palm Springs can help you with these costs.

4.    Bone Quality, width and density:
a.    Dr. Nicholas will first evaluate your jaw bone characteristics with the implant characteristics, and second, to assess the combinations of these characteristics as to the influence on the success rate of the dental implant(s) with the identification of prognostic factors for implant survival and failure.
b.    Panoramic radiographs will be taken to measure alveolar bone levels.  If it is determined that bone is required before the implant restoration can proceed, Dr. Nicholas will select osteoinductive bone allograft to replace and re-grow jaw bone.

5.    Laboratory:
a.    A dental laboratory is used for the actual dental implant prosthetic.  Dr. Anne A. Nicholas uses Iverson Dental Laboratories of Riverside, California for all her dental implant restorations.  See item 1 above for type of implant restoration available.  Dr. Nicholas will help you select the dental implant restoration that is right for you.

If you feel you need dental implant restorations, or not sure, Dr. Nicholas in Palm Desert, or Palm Springs, we will help you determine if this procedure is required to maintain your good dental health.  If you do, there is no better time than right now to visit one of our offices.
